Oh, Canada Day

LOOK LOOK!

Bagged Chocolate Dip

Lord tunderin', the Tim Horton's tent at the Trafalgar Square Canada Day do had doughnuts this year. And a massive queue. And no Ice Capps. Melted or sold out, who knows? After standing in the queue for what must have been around 30 minutes I got to the counter and asked if there was a limit on how many doughnuts you could buy. As there was a limit on the number they had, and everyone was buying one, I was worried there was. Thankfully the lady at the counter said 'heavens no!'. So I got myself a chocolate dip and a Boston cream.

The Boston cream was especially cold, so I figured they must have been shipped in a cooler. I reckon that's the only way they could do it. Even if they were just shipped from one of the few Horton's locations in the UK.

The next culinary delight was a heap of curly fries. They were a bit dear at £5 a servering. The stall was a bit tricksy and didn't post the price for them, just that cheese was £1 extra. The donoughts were crazy cheap at just £1 each.

Boston Cream

The best part of the whole thing was this. While standing eating my curly fries there was group next to me doing the same. One of the guys in the group dropped his empty styrofoam container and a girl in the group shouted 'you can't litter, it's Canada Day!'. Fantastic.

Oh and I was the only person in ear shot that cheered when the MCs asked if there was anyone from P.E.I. there. No cheers for any of the territories, shame.

All Provinces Accounted For

All Provinces Accounted For

Huzah! The Canadian embassy has finally sorted out that situation I flagged up (ah ha!) a few weeks ago. Gone is the surplus New Brunswick flag and the P.E.I. flag is back in place. Congratulations Prince Edward Island on joining Canada again. It didn't even take a massive debt caused by building a railway this time around.

P.E.I. Still Exists, Right?

I know I haven't been there for a while, but I'm pretty sure Prince Edward Island isn't A) now it's own sovereign nation separate from Canada or B) a part of New Brunswick and/or adopted the N.B. flag.

Then why on Earth for the past two weeks has Canada House, the Canadian embassy in Trafalgar Square, been sporting two New Brunswick flags and no P.E.I. flag?

Something's Not Right

I walked by weekend before last and stopped in my tracks thinking something didn't look quite right. In the place of P.E.I.'s flag was a bright new New Brunswick flag. However, a few flags down was the old faded New Brunswick flag. No 'Oiland' flag to be seen. Now I'll never be accused of being overtly pro-P.E.I. but c'mon. This is the embassy, surely someone noticed that?

Apparently not. I walked by again this past weekend and the flag situation was exactly the same.

Apologies for the crappy snap, I was in a rush. But you can see see there's no change from the first photo. Harumph! Maybe someone should tap them on the shoulder and let them know. Perhaps I'll leave a post-it note on the doors next time I'm by.

Electrify That Tree

IMG_2938

Last night I went to the switching on of the lights on the massive Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square for the first time.  On hand were the Salvation Army Band (you can hear a snippet here) and the choir of St. Martin in the Fields to provide carols as well as the Lord Mayor of Westminster and the mayor of Oslo who did the switch on.

Dignitaries

Every year since 1947 the people of Oslo Norway have donated the tree as a gift to the people of Britain for their help during the Second World War.  This particular tree stands 75 feet  high and is 80 years old.

Thankfully it didn't rain and the weather was cool and crisp, just perfect. For some more photos, head over to Flickr.
