A Holiday Photo Sampler

I thought I'd do a post of some of my favourite photos I got over the Christmas holiday.  So without further ado...

Lighting fixtures at Christ Church Spitalfields.  There was a choir practicing while I was there which added to the atmosphere.

Rose Street Invader
Pixel graffiti spotted in Rose Street in Covent Garden. I noticed last weekend that the invader on Southampton Row is gone, for shame.

Afternoon Light 1
Winter afternoon light at King's Cross. I got off the train on platform 6 and started walking towards the front of the station when I had to stop and get a photo. Used by Londonist for Sunday Seasoning last week.

Line 'Em Up
Some good timing in Carey Street near Lincoln's Inn. I've found myself in this area a few times recently probably due to it being a key location in Revelation by C. J. Sansom. I read it over the holidays and loved it. I'm going to have to read the rest of the Shardlake books.

Hey King’s Cross, You Have a New Tube Ticket Hall

The new north ticket hall at King's Cross St. Pancras Underground Station (to use it's full name) opened today.  It's for the deep level lines - the Northern, Piccadilly and Victoria lines.

There's a new outside entrance along Pancras road that is easy to get to from King's Cross platforms 9, 10 and 11.

Brixton-ish

It leads right to the new, massive ticket hall. Seeing this makes you really realise just how small the old (but still open) one is.

Ticket Barriers

Here we have the re-opend walkway to the King's Cross concourse and the new ticket hall from the old deep-level ticket hall. Straight on is the new hall and taking a rightt brings you to the new concourse level entrance/exit.

Walking from the original ticket hall

The new concourse level entrace is off to the left of the old one. There used to be cash machines and benches here before scaffolding took over. Platform 8 is just off in the distance to the right.  Will be interesting to see how this changes if any once the present concourse is demolished.

New Entrance

If you're as into this as I am, there's a few more photos and commentary over on Flickr.

Aged 157, Having a Bit of Work Done

"Now take a nice one to send to Grandma..."

"Now take a nice one to send to Grandma..."

Today in 1852 the London terminus of the Great North Eastern Railway was opened - King's Cross Station. It holds a special place in my heart of course as it's where I usually come and go from London.  The first time I took the train to London after moving here was to King's Cross (after being on a delayed train, a nice welcome by National Rail there).

In the time I've been here I've seen the start of the transformation of the station into what it will look like in a few years time.  The foot bridge and the clock on platform 8 removed, the shops shut up, the concorse entrance to the Tube closed off and the raising of scaffolding along the west side of the station, both inside and out.  Not to mention the constant repositioning of Platform 9 3/4 to keep  tourists on their toes.  Bit by bit, chunks of scaffolding have been removed. Just this past week a few of the shops have re-opened so things are starting to slowly come around.
